Your Small Place For Motivation Mon, 20 Apr 2020 10:39:55 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Why are you biting your nails? No really, WHY? Mon, 20 Apr 2020 10:39:55 +0000 It’s one thing for babies and children to bite their nails and have their fingers in their mouths, but adults need to be more aware of what they’re doing and why.
Yes, of course it looks ridiculous and somewhat grotesque for adults to walk around with fingers in their mouths, biting and gnawing. And there have to be social ramifications as well. There’s the awkward hand holding, since you care deeply for the one you’re with but the thought of holding their unsightly hand may sound shallow but when it comes right down to it, is gross.
It’s important to have clean hands and nails, it makes a statement to those that you engage with everyday. The casual conversation is often distracted by gnarled hands and nails since inevitably most of us use our hands in conversation. Meeting someone new possibly for a job interview, usually begins with a handshake, and right or wrong, your appearance makes an impression. If you can get past the unsightly appearance, there is a roughness that can’t be ignored. It is a different feeling than that of someone that uses their hands for their work as in construction. If this is not enough of an incentive to stop the biting, I’m certain that as you read on you will be forced to rethink this habit and get help to quit biting your nails.

With all of the things you touch during the day and you then put your fingers in your mouth to bite your nails? Now you not only have a germ fest going on in your mouth but you’re left with unsightly fingernails as a result too. Let’s talk about it. We’ll put the aesthetics aside for the moment and look at the health effects. There are many forms of bacteria on your hands, from every surface that you touch or that is exposed to the environment. This means that when you go to your neighborhood coffee shop, buy your coffee, your barista hands you a cup and you think THAT’s where it began? Oh no, opening the door to the shop and the countertops are loaded with germs. Not to be a germaphobe, since we know that there are germs everywhere, but why give them a clear path and invitation into your system? The space under your nails is a hotbed for a plethora of bacteria such as E. coli, salmonella, and those that cause colds and flu.
The biting, if chomped down too far can cause bleeding and infection. This includes the biting of hangnails and cuticles that could lead to permanent damage to the fingernails and their surrounding tissue. This habit is not just a germ or cosmetic issue as we have shown. It’s possible that there could be an underlying cause for the development of this habit. Nail Biting is usually associated with anxiety, it is said that the biting may relieve tension, boredom, or stress. Ongoing nail biting should be addressed with your healthcare professional.

Taking Care of Your Skin is Taking Care of Yourself Tue, 31 Mar 2020 18:09:05 +0000 Taking care of your skin is so truly and deeply important. You might think that it does not matter, that it will grow back healthy over time. But firstly, huh? What does that even mean? Why would

you not want to take care of it starting now? I mean, your skin is basically the first thing that anyone sees when they look at you. If you want to make a good first impression and look your best, you best be looking good. So take care of your skin, no matter what the season is. And depending on the season, there are different ways to do this.

Let’s first start with the cold winter months. It’s super easy for your skin to get dried out during this time. If you’ve ever experienced chapped knuckles and even some bleeding, this is not ‘just because’. It’s because your skin is dry and is simply begging you to help it out. So the best way to prepare is to take the preventative approach. As soon as summer starts coming to an end and fall approaches, carry hand moisturizer with you wherever you go. Put it in your bag, and apply it to your skin often. Do it in the morning before you leave the house. Do it again occasionally throughout the day, especially if you’re out and about a lot. The harsh air and wind can do a tremendous amount of damage if you do not protect yourself adequately. If you do this from the beginning of fall, you should be golden. Otherwise, you might fall into the pitfall that is dried hands.

Lips are also crucial. When you speak to someone, that’s what they see. So of course, it’s best to have luscious lips instead of dry, cracked ones. Always carry a lip moisturizer with you. The more natural, the better. Also apply it before you go to sleep, since otherwise that means 8 hours (wishful thinking) of going sans hydration. This can be even worse if you’re a mouth breather.

And then there’s the face. Now, you might think that you don’t want to get acne so you should not apply moisturizer to your skin. But that’s where you’re wrong. When your skin is too dry it sends signals to your body to produce more sebum, which can actually cause an overproduction and make your skin oilier than you want, thereby leading to more breakouts. So hydrate, and hydrate well. Test out a few moisturizers before you commit to the right one for you.

And lastly, summertime. Don’t underestimate the strength- and danger- of the sun. always, but especially in the summer, apply suntan lotion or something with SPF in it to protect you from harmful UV rays. Luckily, most moisturizers and chap sticks already have SPF in them, so you don’t have to worry. But you do have to worry about applying to the rest of your body, as well as stronger SPF even in those areas if you’re going to be in direct sunlight for an extended period of time.

Vegetarian Food Prepping Wed, 11 Mar 2020 11:30:58 +0000 If it wasn’t difficult enough already being vegetarian, it gets even harder when you find out that many of your favorite vegetarian-friendly foods might actually contain meat products. For example, pizza is a staple food for many vegetarians yet many pizza makers rely on bacon grease in their recipes. Similarly, many vegetarians choose not eat cheeses made with animal rennet, considering it can only be harvested from the inside of an animal’s stomach. Another common vegetarian food which many people get tripped up by is baked beans. While baked beans are inherently vegetarian, most canned baked beans are flavored with pork or bacon. One of the most interesting foods that would surprise vegetarians is anything with artificial vanilla flavoring. While all-natural, castoreum, the common vanilla flavoring agent, is actually made from beaver anus. To make matters even worse, most processed food won’t even list castoreum in the ingredients since the FDA doesn’t require it. Candy with hard coatings – To give these candies their hard shells, confectioners use a material called shellac, which is made from insects. Like castoreum, shellac comes from the anus, in this case from the lac bug. This bug resin is usually processed into dry flakes and dissolved in ethanol to give foods and other materials their protective colorful finishes.

An easy way to ensure that the food you’re eating doesn’t contain any meat is to look for products that have a kosher certificate. Jewish law says people cannot mix meat and milk products so all kosher food is labeled if it’s meat, dairy, or parv (neither dairy or meat).

Making food yourself is the safest and healthiest way to make sure you know exactly what is going into your diet. Not buying any pre packaged food or processed foods is healthier and cheaper. Simply preparing your own meals once a week is a fun and healthy way of food prepping. Many vegetarians I know prep meals once a week to ensure they’re getting the necessary macro nutritions every day. Breaking down your carbohydrate, protein, and fat needs it essential to make sure you have a well balanced diet. I love adding fresh cut salad to every meal with a salad dressing of lemon juice and olive oil. This gives you great vitamins and healthy fats. Olive oil is a very healthy way of ensuring you’re getting healthy fats in your diet.

Avocados are also a very healthy fat to consume. It’s a common misconception that consuming fats makes you fat. Consuming sugar is what will make you fat. Fat isn’t going to get digested and turned back into fat. People over consume sugar and then the sugar is turned into fat. Cut down on your sugar intake and you’ll be better off. It’s easy to consume a lot of sugar especially when you’re vegetarian. Candy and other sweet foods often don’t have any meat products in them and they are easy to grab and everywhere. That is why proper meal prepping is essential for a healthy diet. So you don’t have to fail and just start eating junk because you’ve run out of better options to eat.

My Thoughts on the Carnivore Diet Mon, 10 Feb 2020 10:24:56 +0000 Recently the carnivore diet has become popular due to youtube podcast star, stand-up comedian, UFC commentator, and fitness enthusiast Joe Rogan recently adopting the diet and discussing it

heavily on his podcast. The carnivore diet is nothing new in the nutrition world. The Atkins diet was one of the first that popularized the idea of cutting out everything except meat from your diet in order to lose weight. There have been other diets that have been similar to the carnivore diet as well. The paleo was a kind adapted carnivore diet along with Keto diet. All of these diets are based off of the same principle of taking the body away from consuming and burning carbohydrates and instead burning fat for fuel. Burning fat for fuel is known as ketosis, which is where the keto diet gets its name. These diets will be successful in getting you to lose body fat, but they may also have some health issues.

There are some issues with these diets from a long term health perspective, especially because of cholesterol. Only consuming meat will definitely give you higher cholesterol than a regular balanced diet. The issue of not getting all essential vitamins is also a problem with a limited diet like the carnivore diet. Taking a multivitamin could prevent any vitamin deficiencies while only consuming meat, but I still wouldn’t advise people to only consume meat without any vegetables or fruits. Naturally in-taking vitamins is superior to taking a supplement, in my opinion. But my opinion is that of a holistic natural health perspective.

Exclusively consuming meat, if done, should only be done for a limited amount of time. It can be a great way of losing some weight, but not consuming vegetables and fruits for your entire life is not ideal, even if you take a multivitamin.

The digestive tract of humans was never meant to only consume meat. It was meant to be a variation of foods in order to function properly. Consuming less carbohydrates and more protein and healthy fat is a solid diet to follow. What the government used to tell people to eat when we were younger with the food pyramid was influenced heavily by the agricultural businesses that were based in the US. They produced a lot of grain and the US wanted to capitalize on that by influencing the population to eat more grain. One of the healthiest diets in my opinion is the Japanese diet. It involves a lot of rice, seaweed, and fish. It includes a healthy carbohydrate, one of the most nutrient dense vegetables (yes seaweed is a vegetable), and very lean protein in fish.

If you’d like to try the carnivore diet out, that’s your prerogative. I would only advise you to take a multivitamin, make sure to eat fatty meats not lean meats, make sure you only eat high quality meats, and try to ease your stomach into the diet. Taking any multivitamin will be solid. You will need more fat in your diet because your energy will be coming exclusively from the fat you will be consuming, if you eat lean meats you will not have any energy and you will slowly wither away. Only eat quality hormone free, grass fed and grass finished, and organic animal products. Its the only thing you’ll be eating. Your body will know the difference between quality and crap. Do you digestive tract a favor and don’t dive head first into the carnivore diet. Slowly incorporate less carbs and more meat so your stomach has a chance to adapt to the changes. There are some useful tips on carnivore diet at carnivorestyle.

Making Sex More Comfortable Sun, 28 Jul 2019 14:01:26 +0000 There are times when some of us may find sex uncomfortable for any number of reasons. These may include things like an infection, general vaginal dryness, sex during pregnancy, issues caused by menopause or even an allergic reaction. These are more common than you might think and are generally quite easy to treat or prevent.

When it comes to vaginal dryness, foreplay and lubrication goes a long way to avoid the issue completely. This is especially true for postmenopausal women and using a little lube can really make a big difference in your partner’s performance as well your pleasure during the act. If you’re still young though and vaginal dryness persists, it may be an indication of a more serious health issue and should definitely be checked out by a doctor or gynecologist. Many women still enjoy active sex lives during their pregnancy, however there may come a time when it would be wise to stop – at least for the babies health and a smoother birthing process. Basically, if you start to feel any pain during intercourse while being pregnant, you should probably stop until after the birth or change to less penetrative forms of sex in the interim. Both mental and physical health are strong components in determining someone’s ability to perform in the bed and being aware of these issues or discussing them openly with your partner is a good way to relieve the burden on your shoulders and increase the pleasure of love-making for both parties involved.

If your partner is under performing, it may be pertinent that you discuss any fears, anxieties or emotional pain that may be the underlying cause of the issue. Sometimes it’s something small like a busy day at work, or a general stress that they may be worrying about – other times it may be something more serious like self-esteem issues, problems with vulnerability, serious depression or a change of heart. In either case, seeking the advice of a psychologist or a sex therapist can really help you both (or the person with the issue) come to terms with the problem and enjoy a more mutually beneficial sex-life again as well as help to mend a relationship. When it comes to physical issues like infections, allergic reactions or general pain felt by either party – it’s important for you to get the issue checked out sooner rather than later. If you feel any kind of pain in your cervix, there’s a good chance you’ll need medical treatment and most infections can be treated quite quickly and efficiently in order to avoid suffering or the risk of spreading the infection to your partner. Pay attention to your body as it’s the best way to assure that you treat any physical health issues quickly and efficiently.

Small pillows can also be used to get into a more comfortable position. The more comfortable you are the more fun the experience will be. Placing a pillow under your hips or under your head can help to make the entire act a lot more comfortable.

Swivel Chairs: The Unsung Heros of the Workplace Thu, 23 May 2019 09:35:33 +0000 I was looking around my home office the other day I realized why I prefer to sit on the couch and work. It’s all wrong. My desk sits in a corner of the room with the least amount of sunlight, faces a blank wall, and has a plastic folding chair tucked into it. I’ve gone about it all wrong, causing that space to lack vitality and potential. It got me thinking of my dream workspace and what it would take to create a space of productivity and creativity.

I would absolutely love a standing desk. I hate feeling immobile when I work, a traditional desk and chair have you figuratively “tied to your desk”. Sitting for hours on end damages health on a number of levels. Backaches and neck pain are just a couple of examples of consequences for sitting at a desk for 8 plus hours. While it is recommended to take a break every 20 minutes or so to walk around and rest the eyes, how many people are sitting with a timer doing that? An (albeit, expensive) solution to these problems is a nice, shiny, standing desk.

I also find sitting near a window helps with productivity. Some people may find it distracting but I find it beneficial. Not sitting under florescent light is preferable to me. I would much prefer sunlight. Besides, I would also rather not look up at a blank wall and see some movement outside. If everything else is still, why should I move? If everyone else is moving, why should I be still? Along the same vain, there’s something I’d love to add to my office space: Plants. If you’re feeling dead inside, it helps to have a plant nearby. Maybe having a living thing nearby would help restore life in an otherwise grim workspace. It’s also pleasant to look up and see a bit of color! If everything else is monochromatic, having something green adds energy to the space. Similarly, adding something whimsical can restore energy to a space. In addition to or instead of a work lamp, I’d like to put up some fairy lights.

One small and easy change to make is buying a pair of blue light blocking glasses. Blue light is the harmful light that is produced by LED lights. It goes through your retinas and, over time, can damage sight. You can buy them for about twenty bucks on Amazon and they have very cool styles. I bought a pair, and not only does it reduce eye strain and headaches due to blue light exposure, but I’m told I look very stylish in them.

And lastly, I’d like to bring your attention to the unsung heroes of any work space: Swivel chairs. Like with the standing desks, there’s nothing worse than feeling constrained or immobile. You can move side to side, spin around, launch yourself across the room or anything else you want. Even without any of the above, a swivel chair can make it all A-OK. My point is, the stale, gray, pensive work environment is outdated and ineffective. You’re going to be in this space for a significant part of the day and work already has dreary connotations. Enjoy your space.

What Can The Flu Shot Do For You? Wed, 27 Feb 2019 12:07:27 +0000 The flu vaccine was created to prevent you from getting the flu, but unfortunately, it may not even be able to do that. If you get the flu after being immunized, it may make your illness milder than it would have been without the vaccine. The vaccine has the potential to benefit everyone around you as well as yourself. Since the virus spreads easily, if you get vaccinated, you’re hopefully that one less person sharing it with the world. The reason there are new vaccinations every year and that last year’s isn’t effective anymore is because the vaccine is reformulated every year. It has to be done in a way to protect against strains of the virus that were predicted by the CDC to be most widespread.

The flu vaccine can also save a child’s life. A 2017 study showed the flu vaccination can reduce a child’s risk of dying from influenza. It has also been shown to reduce intensive care unit admissions and the overall duration of hospital stays. The adults that were vaccinated spent, on average, 4 days less in the ICU than those who weren’t vaccinated.

How To Prevent The Flu Naturally

There are 3 possible ways to naturally prevent the flu. The first is sleep. Sleep, in general, is very important to one’s physical and mental health. The longest record of someone not sleeping is 11 days. The then 17-year-old began hallucinating around day 10 and attribute their current insomnia to their childhood stunt. Sleep helps strengthen our immune system as well as our brain. And not getting enough of it seriously leaves us with little protection against viruses, big and small. Being careful to get enough sleep every night can be crucial in preventing yourself from catching the flu this year.

The second way to prevent contracting the influenza virus is by washing your hands. I know it sounds simple because you probably think you wash your hands thoroughly enough. Well, I’m here to tell you that you don’t. The flu is spread like any other virus, from a cough or sneeze. If you are near someone who has the flu and you happen to touch something that might have touched their saliva, your hand now has the virus and if you then rub your eyes- you’re done, you’ve got the flu. This is why washing your hands with hand sanitizer or the old-fashioned way is necessary before you touch your face or someone else’s.

The third way to prevent the flu may come as a surprise to you but it’s exercising! It’s a lesser known fact that exercise promotes good circulation, lowers risk of infection, and releases endorphins- basically natural painkillers. It’s important that you work exercise into your weekly routine. It’s a lot easier to prevent yourself from getting the flu than it is to get through it once it’s contracted.

Every choice we make in life comes with risks. The same goes for the influenza vaccination. If you do decide to get it, you can have a negative reaction and even still contract the flu. If you decide not to get the shot, you may get the flu. If you contract the virus after not getting the vaccination, you wouldn’t know if you would have gotten it even if you did get the vaccine. There are many types of people that are not supposed to get flu shots, for example children under 6 months. There are also types of people that are specifically recommended to get flu shots, like pregnant women. Let me ask you this: Why does it make sense for a pregnant woman to get a vaccine that a child 6 months and younger is not even allowed to have. Last time I checked, an unborn child is under 6 months.

This all leads me to the final question- do you need the flu shot for 2019? I’m going to say…probably not. The chances of it actually preventing you from getting the flu are very slim. It also contains a lot of harmful chemicals and other strange ingredients that you wouldn’t want to be injected into your body. Either way, whatever decision you do make – ensure that it is an educated one. One of my favorite lines to live by is: Everybody does what everybody does, because that’s what everybody does. Don’t be an everybody.

Sights And Sounds Of Jerusalem Wed, 04 Jul 2018 13:45:11 +0000 I used to be interested so many things and over time some of those things have dried up. So I have decided I am going to get back into some of those things.

I used to love to dance. So I am going to go back to Swing Dance and Salsa. Ok so I am investigating different places to go and dance salsa. I have already found a cute place to dance Swing and I have stopped going of late so I am going to go back.

Ok so maybe its time to pick up Salsa again.

There is a place called Yellow Submarine. Its in the Talpiyot area of Jerusalem on Wednesdays. I think I may try this one. Although actually this info was updated in 2001. I am wondering if there is more info other than this.

Ok here is some more info; Merkaz Hamagshimim. This is on Tuesdays at 8pm. The Mirage Club on Thursdays, the party is at 22.30pm on King George.

Hmm, What about Belly Dancing! There us a place called The Swan on Tuesdays at 7.15pm and that costs 50 shekels in the German Colony.

A place called Curves which is also Women Only in Talpiot. Also the YMCA is Women Only too. This is at Sundays at 9pm and Mondays at 11.45am. The YMCA is located on King David Street.

The YMCA has a pretty cool gym too.

Id let to get back into the gym and to classes. I used to be such an exercise junkie. I once used to work out 3 hours a day 6 days a week. It was total heaven in terms of the way I felt.

Apart from wanting to go back to the gym, dance salsa again, go to belly dance and swing dance. Id also really like to improve my bike so I can bike further. It just needs a bit of sprucing up so I may do that. I
actually wanted an electric bike but they are pretty costly. So I may have to save up for that.

Id also like to start doing yoga again and meditation too. I used to do that also. I recently got gifted a ninja bullet so I can make smoothies.
I used to be so health conscious and Id like to go back to being so. I used to feel so good and have so much energy. Its time I think!

Having That Michael Corleone Hair Wed, 10 Jan 2018 15:44:20 +0000 Remember that awesome scene in The Godfather, where Michael and the friend are standing in front of the hospital when a car rolls by, and they both pretend to have a gun in their pocket? Yeah, this post has nothing to do with that. Nevertheless, it is an awesome scene.

Having a good hair care routine is not only recommended, it is damn near necessary for your hair and scalp to develop properly. The body produces and secretes certain amounts of sebum (natural body oil), and in the area of the scalp this can get tricky. The thing which regular shampoos and conditioner do is replace the body’s natural process with their own formula. Is this a good thing? Depends who you ask, really.

I found that it was not good for me. I found that after a few days of not using my go-to products, I began to feel a shift. I went through a few days of discomfort, and then I found what I wanted to find: my own balance. My unique way of taking care of my hair. I didn’t go back to using my regular products. I started using only products which support the body’s natural process, rather than ones which seek to replace it with their own formula. I went kind of “no poo”, and decided that it really does suit my style better.

My hair began to react a lot better once I decided to let it do its thing. I only wash my hair once every week or two. And once every month and a half I use baking soda as shampoo and apple cider vinegar as a conditioner. It is one of the best ways to clean the scalp and make sure that no unwanted elements stay on board.

Strip clean, and use natural products. I’ve been doing this for a while. It may not work for everyone. No, wait. It will definitely not work for everyone, and that is okay. The whole point of going natural, is that you find your own formula, your own combinations of products which work best for you. It is with this kind of process that your body can thrive. And as much as it is true to hair and scalp, it is also true to other areas of your body. Tea tree oil shampoo.

There is a lot to be said in favor of modern medicine and cosmetics, but it seems that in our haste to have everything Bigger! Better! Faster! Now! – we kind of forgot to look after ourselves, and not just at our looks. What can be done? Well, you could try using less commercial products, and more DIY products. I know, it sounds like a hassle and a pain in the ass. But consider this: when you know which compounds and elements affect you in the best possible way; when you know which seasons affect you in which ways; when you know what your body does, and when you compliment it with a natural product – as opposed to a commercial one – the long-term results you get are far better than anything you could buy. This is not true to the short-term. In the short-term, you may very well find that it is the over-the-counter, supermarket-aisle products which can yield the best results. This still doesn’t make them better, mind you.

What The Heck Is Oil Pulling Wed, 20 Dec 2017 14:13:52 +0000 Oil pulling. If you’re surrounded by people who are involved in the newest health trends, you’ve probably heard this terms. Although it kind of sounds like something that the U.S. government would be doing after they invaded afghanistan, it stems from much further east (obviously). It apparently started in India a really long time ago, and they still do it there today.

So essentially what it’s about, is swishing a natural vegetable oil around in your mouth and after that, continuing to swish.. And keep on swishing. It may seem kind of gross, but it has a slew of benefits like maintaining your oral health, keeping gingivitis at bay, whitening teeth, and making your breath more fresh. But why and how might you ask, assumably shaking your head. Well, the enzymes from the fat of the oil get all up in your mouth and pull the bacteria out of there like a character in GTA pulling an old lady out of her car. After the bacteria’s been pulled out of your mouth, gums and throat, the idea is that you’re gonna wanna spit that out in the garbage. I know that you’re probably used to spitting toothpaste down the drain, but this oil might clog up your plumbing pipes as it does with your body’s pipes.

So to recap, take some oil, preferably coconut or sesame oil because who knows, they’ve probably also been using those in india for millions of years. I personally use coconut oil, because it’s already known for its antibacterial properties. So, swish that around your mouth for like ten minutes, and spit that bacteria out. You might be questioning this saying “what about the rest of my body?” Well, apparently, a big percentage of bacteria in your system hangs out in your mouth, entering your body that way. Furthermore, your body goes through enormous stress trying to clear out last weeks cheetos and its bacteria out of your mouth. After you’ve oil pulled, you’ve reduced all that stress. Now your body can focus on other parts of it that need bacteria clearing.

Now once you spit out the oil, you’re gonna wanna give your teeth a quick brush to clean out the residual oil and whatever else that you’ve pulled. And that’s it, it’s as simple as that.

I’ve only spoken about oral hygiene benefits of oil pulling, but that’s not the only thing that has people running around swishing and looking like mimes trying to communicate with people. It can also help with relieving all sorts of pains. Think migraines and hangovers. It even improves your sleep quality and helps with acne. Fascinating isn’t it?

Now I don’t think this is the secret to immortality that the pharmaceutical companies have been hiding from you despite what the buzzfeed article might tell you. It is however much more than a new fad or trend as lot’s of doctors have endorsed it. The science also makes sense if you look further into it.  And let’s face it , everyone wants whiter teeth and better breath. So come on, get some oil and join in on the swishing.

If you’ve enjoyed this piece of literary history, you’ll be sure to like the others on our blog
